Proper flag etiquette is essential for respecting the American flag, as well as other flags, whether displayed in a business, home, or during special events. Below, we provide guidelines to help you display, handle, and care for your flags respectfully.
Position of Honor: The American flag should always be positioned to its own right. When displaying flags on a wall, the union (stars) should be at the top left corner, as viewed by the observer.
Multiple Flags: When flown with other flags (state, organizational, etc.), the American flag must always be on the highest flagpole and to the observer’s left. No flag should be placed above or to the right of the American flag.
Indoor Display: When displayed indoors, the flag should be on a staff and positioned to the right of the speaker or staging area. If displayed behind a speaker, it should hang flat, with the union at the top left corner.
Raising the Flag: The American flag should be raised briskly to the top of the flagpole. It should be lowered slowly and ceremoniously.
Half-Staff: When flown at half-staff, the flag should be first hoisted to the peak for a moment, then lowered to half-staff. Before lowering it for the day, it should again be raised to the peak before being lowered.
When to Fly at Half-Staff: The flag is flown at half-staff on designated days like Memorial Day until noon, as well as by order of the President or state governor in cases of national mourning.
