Flag Etiquette: Honoring the Stars and Stripes

At Toledo Flags, we believe in honoring the symbols that represent our nation’s values, history, and freedom.

Proper flag etiquette is essential for respecting the American flag, as well as other flags, whether displayed in a business, home, or during special events. Below, we provide guidelines to help you display, handle, and care for your flags respectfully.

Displaying the American Flag

Position of Honor: The American flag should always be positioned to its own right. When displaying flags on a wall, the union (stars) should be at the top left corner, as viewed by the observer.

Multiple Flags: When flown with other flags (state, organizational, etc.), the American flag must always be on the highest flagpole and to the observer’s left. No flag should be placed above or to the right of the American flag.

Indoor Display: When displayed indoors, the flag should be on a staff and positioned to the right of the speaker or staging area. If displayed behind a speaker, it should hang flat, with the union at the top left corner.

Raising and Lowering the Flag

Raising the Flag: The American flag should be raised briskly to the top of the flagpole. It should be lowered slowly and ceremoniously.

Half-Staff: When flown at half-staff, the flag should be first hoisted to the peak for a moment, then lowered to half-staff. Before lowering it for the day, it should again be raised to the peak before being lowered.

When to Fly at Half-Staff: The flag is flown at half-staff on designated days like Memorial Day until noon, as well as by order of the President or state governor in cases of national mourning.

Handling the Flag

Respectful Treatment: The American flag should never touch the ground, water, or any object beneath it. It should be handled with respect at all times.

Folding the Flag: When not in use, the flag should be folded into a triangle, with only the blue field of stars visible. This traditional method reflects honor and respect for the flag.

Storage: Flags should be stored in a clean, dry place to prevent damage. Proper storage helps maintain the flag’s integrity and appearance.

Flag Maintenance

Cleaning and Repairing: Flags can be cleaned to maintain their appearance. If your flag becomes damaged or faded, Toledo Flags offers repair and maintenance services to restore it to its original glory.

Retirement: When a flag is no longer suitable for display, it should be retired in a respectful manner, preferably by burning. Many local organizations, such as the American Legion, provide flag retirement services.

During National Anthem or Pledge of Allegiance

When the National Anthem is played or the Pledge of Allegiance is recited, all individuals present should face the flag, stand at attention, and place their right hand over their heart. Those in uniform should give the appropriate salute.
